Eight top tips to producing a successful publication

Here are 8 tips to contract publishing.

1. Get help! – Contract publishing is a specialist field and it may be helpful to get specialists on board to help you. You can outsource just about every function from designing through to circulation management – saving you time and money.
2. Make sure its written well – You need to engage with your readers and build up an editorial relationship which has integrity - so don’t skimp on editorial quality! Well written content will become well read content!
3. You may know your market – but you still need to research – You may think you know your market sector and your customers inside out. But publishing is a whole new ball game. You need to be confident that you thoroughly understand the readership habits of your market – why not start by checking out the competition?
4. Get some advertising or sponsorship support! – Publishing can be an expensive business, so if you need to try and balance your budget with advertising, you need to appreciate that advertisers will not be queuing up at your door! It may be worth getting expert help.

5. Spend time developing a Media Pack – For your publication to generate support from sponsors and advertisers you will need to demonstrate why they should advertise. A well produced and presented Media Pack will help the sales process – most advertisers will want to see your pack before committing.
6. A quality design will help make a quality publication. - Your publication will need to show integrity – good writing that is well presented will help impress your readers and your advertisers. Publication design is another specialist skill – get help again!
7. Think about your budget - It is important to budget properly for your publication. Be realistic about your advertising revenue targets – and make sure you buy well. In particular make sure you buy your print well.
8. Build up – and maintain - your circulation database - Your circulation list is like gold dust. It will take careful management not only to make sure you’re getting your publication out tot hose who want it – but making sure you’re not wasting money by sending it to people who have left their address.
